Mike Phillips passed away at home surrounded by his family on January 5th, 2022.
Mike was a builder. He built businesses and cabins. He built relationships and was always a friend at the ready. He built a family who loved him very much. He helped build the Olympic Peninsula through his charitable pursuits including work with United Good Neighbors, The YMCA, Rotary International, The United Methodist Church, and Meals on Wheels.
Mike was a grower. He was brought up on the farm of his parents Donald and Jesse Phillips which supplied meat and produce to local supermarkets. Farm life carried the lessons of hard work, and that in life anything worthwhile had to be cultivated.
Mike was a learner. He served his country by joining the Army National Guard after he graduated from Port Angeles High School. He later attended and graduated from Olympic College, The University of Washington, and Michigan State University.
Mike was laughter... he was always at a bit of mischief. All with good humor of course. Life can be heavy after all, and laughter lightens the load. Mike was in no greater humor than when he was carrying his big red backpack, loaded with everything needed for an adventure in the wilds of Olympic National Park. Up there he gave his family, scouts, church groups and friends never forgotten adventures.
Mike was a great guy and we loved him very much. He is survived by his wife of 60 plus years Willa and his children Lori (Steve), Brian (Christina), Jennifer (Brad) and Eric. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. For those that would like to make a donation in his memory, the family suggests Nor'Wester Rotary of Port Angeles, Sequim Sunrise Rotary, or a charity of your choice.
