She graduated from Proctor High School in nearby Proctor, Minnesota at the top of her class with the high honor of Salutatorian where she played the clarinet in the school band. The award-winning band travelled around the United States performing including at the Rose Bowl in California.
Following high school, she started college in Glendale, California, studying fashion design where she met and married Bruce El Von Bevers. She would knit or crochet while riding in the car or watching TV attributing her talent for sewing to her Great Aunt Helga Johnson (nee Ekeroth), who she lived with for several years. She started by sewing doll clothes at a young age.
After Evelyn and Bruce divorced and sold the family home, she married David Upham and moved to Marysville, Washington. David and Evelyn moved several times in Washington and Oregon finally settling in Sequim, Washington. She worked as an accountant and did the family taxes. They traveled extensively for vacations, even rafting down the Colorado River for eight days. They stayed in shape by bicycling and taking aerobics classes together.
